Dear Jan, who is she?

Since getting home, several people have asked the questions,

Who is Jan?

Is she a real person, or, either of you (Tim and Ruth)?

We are now free to reveal the identity, and divulge the truth.  Jan is a real person and not fictitious.

She's the one in the left of the picture, the smiley one.  She wouldn't confirm her age, but she is as old as her skin, and a bit younger than her teeth.
Thank Jan.  Your help to Tim was invaluable.

Jan, at our wedding.

Safely home

The journey from Spanish Springs (nr Oxford) FL to Orlando International Airport was fine.  Fine, - except that we got a bit lost!

We stayed at a hotel that was, well, less than great.  But we were pretty well tired out by all the excitement in the Spanish Springs square with all the old codgers in their golf buggies parading in support of Donald Trump.
It was all a bit too much to cope with.  It was a bit detached from reality.  Here we were in a region that the yanks had wanted to re-create Spain, and so that's what they had done.
Here we were watching people who were total Donald Trump fans.  They seemed detached from reality for sure!!
But leaving this place should have been simple.  Somehow we ended up on a different route from the one we had planned.  Result, - we had no idea which road we were on for a very long time of the last bit of our journey.
However, we made it!  With about an hour to spare for returning the hire car.
Checking in was easy.
Lunch was easy.
Having a doze was easy while we waited the next 4 hours to board our flight.

And now we are back in Blighty.

Don't give up on the blog just yet dear readers, because Tim is going to post some stats about the trip, (Yay! miles per gallon and stuff like that), and Ruth is going to do a kind "Best of Harveymoon" blog-post (things we liked and things we didn't care for).

A Surprise End to Harveymoon

The morning started superbly with a day like the best of a British summer. Tim was supping a cup of coffee on the veranda by the time Ruth was awake at 9.30 am.
Steinhatchee River looked wonderful this morning, as we left our motel by the riverside and drove round the area before leaving for Orlando.
Our aim was not to actually get to Orlando today, but to take a leisurely drive towards it.  We decided we would stop overnight somewhere near where the I-75 meets the Florida Turnpike.  That particular area was not all that great so we headed towards Oxford, FL.
Stopping off at Walmart for a few late minute bits before leaving the USA, we enquired of a friendly passer-by where we might find some overnight accommodation.
She turned out to be English and from Salisbury, Wiltshire.  She directed us to Spanish Springs, - an out of town area where would find plenty of choice.
“Pop into town” she said with a smile.  “There will be music and dancing in the square.”
As we headed for the car we noticed several unusual golf buggies coming to park!

Driving on to Spanish Springs was a complete revelation!
Do you remember that we blogged about the Amish traveling in the horse and traps, one after the other, to an event?

Well, this was very similar, except for one difference.  The horse and traps had been replaced by, ….
Yes, You’ve guessed it!
Golfing buggies.
We thought we had seen a lot on campsites and generally in the USA.  But this took that whole subject to a new level!
This was golf-buggy city!
It seemed like a cross between a modern day version of the Flintstones, and the Amish!

We then accidently came across Spanish Springs square.

This one had bigger tyres than the others

Bugsy Malone Special

A golf buggy version of Michael's first car

Sure enough, it had a very Spanish feel to it.  There were bars, shops, restaurants, the lot, in a mock Spanish style.  The colours of the buildings, the architecture, - everything had a Spanish flavour to it.
Sure enough, there were dancers in the square, dancing to the sound of live singing (to a backing track).

Enter stage left, Tim and Ruth.
Enter stage right, golfing buggies in vast quantities and various shapes.  Driven by people of vast quantities and various shapes.  All tooting and hooting, decorated up, and waving flags.
This was the epicentre of the Donald Trump campaign!  Either that, or this was golf club heaven.  Either way, we had arrived in time for the party.  Music on the bandstand, dancers in the square, accompanied by the convoy of golf buggies.

We can only imagine that all these dear people have aimed throughout their lives to live in such a place, and own a golf buggy of this caliber in a town that was sign-posted a “Golf Buggy town”!  There were even special lanes for golf buggies, and their very own filling station for whatever fuel they use.
The whole point of the motorcade was in fact, to promote and support USA Presidential nominee, Donald Trump.
Tim even managed to halt the procession in order to shake Donald’s hand!

The conclusion we came to was that they are all totally bonkers!

Secretly, I think Tim's a little jealous of those that have buggies, or is it that he wants to run for vice president?

Steinhatchee, FL

Wow, what a wonderful place. It had some storm damage from a few weeks ago, but it was just beautiful today. A picture says a thousand words....

Coming up Trumps!

The Harveymoon is almost over!  Boo hoo!
Today we said a fond farewell to our beloved friend, Harvey.  He has served us faithfully and well for 10 weeks.
We met Ron at Camping World, Tallahassee.  Camping World is a big RV and camper chain of stores around the country.  They sell everything from toilet paper, to BIG RVs.
We were a bit later than we wanted to be, because of the usual last minute panics and hold ups with packing.  These things always happen, don't they!
Good as his word, Ron was there to meet us.  Ron has been our travel guru.  The unseen one on our travels.  Whenever we've needed a bit of advice, Ron has been there for us, to guide us on our way.  We can't thank him enough.  He should be in business as a travel consultant expert!
He kindly took us to pick up a hire car, and generally brought us back down to earth, so that we didn't bump or crash-land.
Soon we were on our way towards our flight home from Orlando international airport.
Ron had suggested a few places for us to stop off en route, and he suggested Steinhatchee, FL would be a good choice.
Right, yet again, Ron.  Star man!

Fare thee well, Harvey.  We will miss you.

Last night we were aware that it was the big showdown between Donald Trump and Hilary Clinton.  It shouldn't have been shown before the watershed of 10 pm, but it was.
They slugged it out, mercilessly exposing each others indiscretions.
As one person we met said, "Are they the best two Americans we can offer for presidency?"  He seemed ashamed of the whole thing.

Tonight we found ourselves in Steinhatchee and booked ourselves an inn for the night.  The receptionist, Becky, suggested a few places to eat.  Casey's Cove was one of them.  She said it was by the gas station.  Ruth thought this meant a place like those towers for delivering North Sea Gas.  A gasometer thing!  I thought it probably meant a petrol station.   It was a diner.  Just the sort of thing I like.  Good food in there we hoped.
Anyway, we found it and got ourselves some delicious food, superbly prepared for us by Megan.

Marvellous Megan, and Ruthie

She served it up to our specification and offered us advice for some of the ingredients.
Megan was one of those better Americans, of which there are plenty.  The shame is that they are not in high office.  Megan was polite, friendly, obliging, and thoughtful.
It was a pleasure to meet you Megan.
We will blog about the things we like and dislike about USA in an exciting upcoming blog.  But for now, we want to say that we have come up trumps (NOT "the Trump") in meeting Megan and Ron & Cecile.
Ron Baker for President!  That's what we say.  He'd sort the country out!

Big RV rig, plus Harley Davidson, plus car leaving our site this morning!  Nice!

Dear Tim and Ruth

It's been an absolute pleasure! Can't wait to see you guys soon for a lovely catch up. At least you don't have to tell us all about your trip!!

How strange it will be, coming home. There will be a huge adjustment as you 'stay still' a while.
The travel bug is very hard to shake.
You will probably spend your evenings planning the next trip!

How awesome this has all been.

Dear Jan

Dear Jan
You are soooo good.  Thanks for all the help you've been able to give me.  It has certainly helped me to sort out my life with my new lovely wife.

Jan's reply to yesterday's agony......

Now this is something I have nagged Ruth about for YEARS!!!!
I agree - she should have said "yay!!!  Ha ha I beat you, you old fool, ha ha!!!"
But it's just not in Ruth's nature.
She's a giver.
I suggest starting a 'sorry' box where she coughs up a £1 every time, then use the money to take her out for a lovely meal where you can say sorry all night for too many trips to Walmart or not listening enough or whatever.
Hope that helps!!
