Tybee Island

Tybee Island- North Beach

On our way to Savannah, we decided to stop off at Tybee Island. Ron and Cecile had recommended it to us. Thank you!

Tybee Beach Lighthouse

We booked in for two nights at Rivers End Campsite with the plan of exploring the beach today and going into Savannah tomorrow. As we arrived at the beach, Tim noticed after taking a picture that the camera lens had got stuck. Arrrgghhh!! So, off we toddled (or cycled) back to Harvey to see what Tim the man with the Swiss Army Knife could do. This took a 'little longer' than expected.

Ruth, getting wise to the ways of Tim knew it would be no use rushing him. If we had headed onto the beach WITHOUT it being fixed, the day would be a disaster. Tim would have to sit on the beach with his mind whirling with possibilities of how it could be fixed, what tool to use and how on earth it came to be like that in the first place. He would have to consider the cost of it being fixed and whether Aldi would have anything cheap enough to help! As the seconds turn to minutes and the minutes turn to hours, he could get to the point of hyperventilation!

Ruth sat outside and read. Good move!

After sunset, I mean lunch, we headed down to the beach. After watching endless youtube clips on how to resolve the problem, he finally gave up.

Arriving at the beach for the second time we settled down. It was beautiful. The heat of the sun tempered by the coolness of the breeze.

Tim found it hard to sit still very long, so after trying to phone David and being unsuccessful, he decided to go for a swim.

Now, for those of you that remember our day at Myrtle Beach, you will remember our warnings about sharks. You will also remember how important it was that IF you had to go in the water, to only go up to your chest. We discussed the position of Tim's chest in relation to his shoulders and off he went. Ruth sat up and watched.

If you look carefully, you can see Tim with the bike.

All was fine, Tim jumped in and out of the waves and never even took his feet of the ground. He occasionally turned to see if Ruth was still watching, just in case he could go a sneaky few more yards. And eventually, he wandered back up the beach.

As Tim stood talking with his back to the sea, Ruth looked over to the place he'd been swimming. There, in the water, just yards behind where he had been were TWO grey fins just poking up above the water line. They disappeared. Ruth in shock hurriedly explained what she saw and sure enough Tim saw them too. We were mortified! A mother ran to the water's edge.

Ruth exclaimed, "but there's someone in the water", pointing over to the left. Tim and Ruth began to rush down towards the shore line.

The mother got out her camera. Her camera! Her camera, at a time like this?! What was she thinking! Her children were in the water, just yards from the sharks.  Surely she could see what we could see!
Tim hurried over to her.

'Aren't the dolphins lovely.' she said.

OOOPS!

Tim rushed for his camera and then remembered it was broken. Drat!

The dolphins continued to swim in and out of the waves while pelicans flew overhead. It was wonderful......now at least!

The rest of the day was quite a lot calmer. Tim went for a bike ride across the beach, climbed the nearest cliff in his mind and made a basket out of the reeds.

That camera still had to be mended!

Normal life for those on Tybee Beach

Dear Jan

Dear Jan,
Thank you for the reply, copied out below.  I hope you had a great holiday.

I will try to take your sound and wise advice.

Just one thing, what did you find amusing on the blog posted on 14 September?  (Location, location, location).  Was it Mount Ararat?   (Don't answer that one, Jan. xxx" says Ruth)

Dear Tim
Firstly sorry for delay but just got back from holiday. Well I'm not sure I qualify to answer as I have been married 38 years and Chris still doesn't listen to me, but he pretends by nodding and making funny noises which is his attempts at enthusiasm. What us girls REALLY NEED is eye contact. Big beady eyed eye contact. Even raised eyebrows if you can manage it! Just try it and watch Ruth's delight! Xx

Today's question for you,....

Dear Jan,
Ruth still is not keen on letting me go shopping on my own in Walmart, or to go swimming on my own in the sea.
And when we walk into town, she insists on holding my hand.
Do you think she is being a tad unreasonable? Or am I just being a bit paranoid?

Tim.
